Accessibility Statement
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. WCAG defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.
The Veterinary Dental Arts website is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We consider the site substantially conformant with that standard, with the known limitations described below. Conformance is something we maintain over time, not a single checkpoint, so we re-evaluate the site whenever we make significant changes.
What we have done
Specific accessibility features built into every page of this site:
- Skip-to-content link as the first focusable element on every page, so keyboard and screen-reader users can bypass the navigation
- Visible focus indicators on every interactive element (a 3px outline that meets WCAG focus-visibility requirements)
- Keyboard navigation for every interactive element — navigation, dropdowns, forms, and accordions can be operated with Tab, Enter, Space, and arrow keys without a mouse
- Color contrast verified at WCAG AA ratios for body text (cream on ink at 13.5:1, rust on cream at 4.81:1, and other combinations independently checked)
- Information is never conveyed by color alone — "Free" labels include the word "Free," required form fields have both a visible asterisk and an
aria-requiredattribute - Descriptive alt text on every meaningful image, and
alt=""on purely decorative images so screen readers can skip them - Form labels are linked to their inputs with
<label for="">— placeholder text is never used as the only label - Form errors and success messages use ARIA live regions so screen readers announce them, and focus moves to the success message after a successful submission
- Semantic HTML — one
<h1>per page, hierarchical headings, a single<main>landmark, descriptive link text rather than "click here" - Reduced-motion support — marquees and scroll-driven animations are disabled when the visitor's browser or operating system requests reduced motion
- Touch target size of at least 44 by 44 CSS pixels on touch devices, with comfortable spacing between adjacent targets
- Responsive layout that works at 200% browser zoom without losing content or function
- Page language declared with
<html lang="en">so screen readers pronounce content correctly
Compatibility
This site is designed and tested to work with current versions of the following:
- Browsers: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on desktop, tablet, and mobile
- Screen readers: tested with VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, and with NVDA on Windows
- Keyboard navigation: the full site is operable with a keyboard alone, without a mouse or touch input
- Operating systems: macOS, iOS, Windows, and Android
The site is not designed for, and may not work fully with, browsers more than three major versions out of date. If you are using older assistive technology and need help reaching us, please use the contact options below.
Known limitations
We aim to be honest about what is still imperfect. As of the last update of this statement, we are aware of the following:
- Painted brand imagery. Several hero images include the practice name or a brand phrase painted into the artwork. Screen readers cannot read text inside images. The page's HTML always contains a full text equivalent (the page title, headings, and body copy convey the same information). The painted text is decorative reinforcement, not information that exists only in the image.
- Third-party content. Where we link to external sites (for example, the Google or Netlify privacy policies), we cannot control the accessibility of those sites. We choose links to reputable providers but do not audit their conformance.
- Older browsers. Visual fallbacks (such as gradient backgrounds shown when an image fails to load) are provided, but pages may render less elegantly on browsers that do not support modern CSS features.
If you find an accessibility issue not listed here, please tell us — see the feedback section below.
Assessment approach
This site is assessed using the following methods:
- Self-evaluation against the WCAG 2.1 Level AA success criteria, performed by the site's developers during build and at each significant content update
- Automated testing using accessibility checkers in the build process, including contrast verification through tools such as the WebAIM contrast checker
- Manual keyboard and screen-reader testing on the most commonly used patterns (navigation, forms, accordions, hero sections)
We do not currently engage a paid third-party accessibility auditor. As the practice grows, we plan to commission a periodic third-party audit and will update this statement with the date and scope of the most recent audit.
